During the late 1890s, it was clear to the United States that expanding our foreign trade was necessary in order to adequate to(p) competitive markets to sell the goods being produced. President Roosevelt knew that European countries were colonizing as many territories as they could to strengthen their economies and felt that the US should do the same in Latin America (Unit 8, Lesson 1, Expansion in the Pacific). He saw the United States as being a peacemaker with the job of keeping order among the less cultivate countries of Latin America. To enforce this way of thinking, Roosevelt began to build up the legions and navy forces. His policy became known as Big join Diplomacy or the Roosevelt Corollary of the Monroe Doctrine, where the United States would act as a protector of Latin American countries.



It would also, if necessary, become involved in situations that would put these smaller countries at risk. An example of this was when the Dominican commonwealth owed a lot of money to a few European countries and stopped payment. President Roosevelt issued his corollary and prevented any takeover by those European countries.
